TASS is a charity that was set up over 30 years ago to support the older population in Tavistock and surrounding areas.  It is an organisation dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of older people to ensure they can remain independent and are able to make their own choices on how they live their life.

Tavistock Area Support Services, A local charity for local people

The charity began after 5 ladies got together to look at what was needed for older people in the area and established Tavistock and District Age Concern in 1985..

Starting out in The Guide Hall, the group used community buildings from the Tavistock Town Hall to the Parish Rooms, for their meetings and even sourced the first minibus.

During this time the group started and set up village drop-in centres in Horrabridge and Milton Abbot.  Over the first 14 years it continued to grow and in 1999 the charity changed its name to Tavistock Area Support Services and built the Anchorage Centre.

The Charity was now in a position to offer space to other community groups, such as Parkinsons, Stroke and Memory Cafe.  The managing group then purchased more buses in order to bring more people to activities and take out on day trips

Since then, TASS has continued to grow to the organisation it is today offering Information and Advice, Befriending, Enabling, Hospital Car Service, Life Stories and drop ins at Lifton, Mary Tavy and support the Bere Alston Film Club, as well as Centre Activities all listed here on our website.

There is a small core staff employed by TASS to oversee the running of the charity but in the main, the services are provided and delivered by volunteers, some of them very long standing.

Over the 35 years that TASS has been operating, it has grown into a unique organisation always trying to meet the demands of a growing population.  At this moment in time, TASS is undergoing some necessary changes to ensure the services it provides are still needed and meet the requirements of today’s older population.  More importantly we still need to be able to fund those services.
