TASS has been awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund (Awards For All) to develop and support the befriending service. The grant is specifically designated to extend the service into the outlying villages and hamlets in the Tavistock area.

Our current Befriending Service has proved to be both popular and successful in the more than two years it has been running. We have all read sad reports in the newspapers of isolated people dying unnoticed. Sometimes they have refused professional help because they fear losing their independence. Our befrienders are often able to help because people learn to trust them and know that they are free to choose what help they want.

Some clients just want someone to visit for a cuppa and a chat, others want to go shopping, visit the pub, go to the cinema, go for a walk or a swim. Sometimes the befriender will help them to join a local social group or take up an old or new hobby or someone to go with them on a TASS outing.

We need men and women of all ages, with a wide range of interests and experience as volunteers for the befriending service. You may be retired, unemployed, a student, a carer or someone unable to work through disability or a mum or dad with time to spare while your children are at school, in fact anyone with time and commitment to give. You may be someone who has experienced loneliness and know how important having someone to spend some time with you can be.

The befriending volunteers will all have a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) check. We offer a six week training programme for our volunteers, two hours per week. The training programme runs twice a year, in spring and again in the autumn. We look to recruit 6 – 8 local people interested in enabling others to enjoy life for each course. The training programme is free and befrienders have regular on-going support.

If you would like to be able to improve the quality of an older person’s life and enjoy yourself at the same time please contact TASS on 01822 616958 to get a volunteer application form.

Befrienders do change people’s lives, including their own!
